MELAKA: A frustrated burglar torched the Selandar Post Office in Jasin after failing to find any valuable items after breaking into the premises on Sunday night (July 18).
Melaka CID Chief Asst Comm Mohd Sukri Kaman said the 43-year-old suspect was detained early Monday morning (July 19), just hours after the post office manager alerted police.
"The 36-year-old manager found his office ransacked and several pieces of furniture damaged by fire when he rushed there at 11pm on Sunday after the alarm was triggered.
"Luckily, the fire did not ravage the whole building," he said on Monday.
ACP Mohd Sukri said the suspect, who is currently restricted to the Jasin district under the Prevention of Crime Act 1959, was apparently unhappy when he had to leave empty-handed and showed his displeasure by setting fire to the place.
He said the suspect had a record of 11 prior criminal offences.
ACP Mohd Sukri said the suspect has been remanded for four days to assist the investigation under Section 448 of the Penal Code for trespass.
