PETALING JAYA: DAP’s Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming has urged all political parties to consider the proposals by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to end the political impasse.
He said the reforms suggested will leave a lasting effect on Malaysian politics if passed.
“The Prime Minister has proposed a way forward with a number of institutional reforms that could leave a lasting impact on Malaysian politics if passed.
“I think that all political parties should sit down to discuss if these terms are acceptable or not, no?” asked Ong, in a tweet, after a televised special address by Muhyiddin on Friday (Aug 13).
His party mate Klang MP Charles Santiago questioned what the bipartisan support will be for, and what will be the results of such support for the people.
“Muhyiddin has been in power for the last one-and-a-half years and for the past six months, he has been given blanket powers under a state of emergency.
“We now have a country in tatters, rising Covid-19 cases, an economy which has contracted by 2%, a rising unemployment rate and it does not take a rocket scientist to realise that the Klang Valley hospitals have broken down, as many continue to die in the wards.
“Do we give support to the same government who may use the same approach and the same management and expect different results? We have continuously been consulted by the Finance Minister for our views every year, but nothing has ever come out of these discussions,” said Santiago.
He also said it would be better for Muhyiddin to face the vote of confidence, and if he fails to get the majority, to allow the King to call for a new political alignment to form a new government.
The Prime Minister has offered a reform agenda and promises more financial help to manage the Covid-19 pandemic should he get bipartisan support to enable Perikatan Nasional to remain a government under his leadership during a looming vote of confidence in Parliament.
