IPOH: The Perak Fire and Rescue department has identified at least 43 monsoon hotspots in the state, says state director Azmi Osman.

       He said the department will be equipped with the necessary equipment and vehicles to handle the upcoming monsoon season which is expected to start on Sept 24.

       Azmi said that flooding is anticipated in 11 areas in the Kerian district, 10 areas in Larut Matang Selama, seven in Batang Padang and four in Hilir Perak.

       He added that there are three areas in three districts - Kinta, Perak Tengah and Manjung - that are being monitored for flooding, with one more in Hulu Perak and another in Muallim.

       Speaking at a press conference at the state headquarters on Tuesday (Sept 21), Azmi said that to prepare for the upcoming monsoon season, the department has come up with a strategy to ensure smooth operations in saving and transferring flood victims.

       “Among the things we have done is checking the relief centre and its facilities such as fire extinguishers and accessibility in case something happens at the centre," he said.

       “We will also be working closely with several departments and agencies such as the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) and the Meteorological Department where we will monitor the weather closely to prepare ourselves," added Azmi.

       He also said that the department and the DID will also monitor small drains and rivers as these may contribute to flash floods.

       Azmi added that the department is now equipped with 61 boats and heavy machinery to prepare themselves for the monsoon season.

       “We also set up a task force consisting of 40 officers that are trained and experienced in the monsoon season to help states in the East Coast should they need any help.

       “If the situation gets worse for these states, our officers will be sent to assist in any way needed,” added Azmi.

       He also advised the public to put recreational activities such as swimming in the river or hiking on hold.

       “As the monsoon season is approaching, we hope that the public will not do any recreational activities near the ocean or river. If we can stay at home during the pandemic, we can also stay at home until the monsoon season ends,” he said.
