Queen health update: What's wrong with the Queen?

The Queen, 95, recently had a spell of ill health which saw her spend a night in hospital last week. The Palace's medical advice has slowed but not completely halted the monarch's schedule, which until now has progressed uninterrupted. The plans will see her sidestep the COP26 conference with Prince Charles taking the reins in her stead, and royal officials have acted quickly to dispel any rumours.

Buckingham Palace first took precautionary measures for the Queen's health on October 20.

The Palace cancelled her scheduled trip to Northern Ireland on medical advice, which the monarch "reluctantly" accepted.

Doctors advised she rest "for the next few days" and revealed no further details around her condition at the time.

The palace added her medical advice was not prompted by coronavirus concerns.

But yesterday, the news emerged she had moved to hospital.

She spent Wednesday night at King Edward VII hospital, a private institution in central London used by royals for more than a century.

A Palace spokesman said she stayed for "preliminary investigations".

They added she had left the hospital and returned to Windsor on Thursday afternoon, where she remained "in good spirits".

She had reportedly returned to her desk for "light work" by the end of the day.

Palace officials have remained tight-lipped about the reasons for the recent precautions.

Wednesday's "preliminary investigations" marked her first hospital stay in nearly a decade.

The last time she visited King Edward VII was in 2013 when she developed gastroenteritis.

Her cancelled slate in Northern Ireland would have seen her celebrate the home nation's partition and addition to Great Britain.

The duties continue what has proven a busy month for the monarch, who still refuses to slow down despite her age.

Sky News royal correspondent Rhiannon Mills said it was "not surprising" she received medical advice due to this.

She added that despite her "privileged life", the Queen has "been undergoing a very busy work schedule".

And her work shows no sign of slowing down as she nears her all-important platinum jubilee.

The event, which takes place next year, marks her 70th year on the throne.

The Government has plans to mark the occasion with a series of celebratory events in early 2022.

She is the only royal to mark a reign of this length, exceeding her closest competition, Queen Victoria, by seven years.
