THE Tamil Nadu state government’s announcement of closing down around 2,000 Amma mini medical clinics has infuriated opposition parties, Makkal Osai reported.
The clinics were started by the previous ADMK government and are named after the late J. Jayalalithaa, the long-time chief minister who was fondly referred to as Amma, which means mother.
The measure was announced by minister M. Subramaniam, who said the clinics were supposed to have been temporary facilities to help in the fight against Covid-19 but since the government’s strategy against the pandemic and isolation procedures have changed, the facilities were not needed.
The government, said ADMK’s chief, was closing down the clinics – a boon to poor residents – because the facilities bore Jayalalithaa’s name.
> Eleven operators who have been running their roadside stalls for 22 years in Sungai Gadut, Negri Sembilan, were shocked to receive a two-week evacuation notice, Makkal Osai reported.
The notice from the city council was accompanied by an impending cut to the water and electricity supply, stall operators G. Palaniandy and P. Kamaladevi claimed.
They urged the council to cancel the notice and instead help them set up a proper place to run their business.
