MUAR: Efforts to resolve the problem of floods in Bentayan, situated within the town of Muar, will be among the main priorities of Barisan Nasional candidate Gan Q’i Ru if she wins the seat.

       The 39-year-old mother of three said she grew up in Muar and understood the issues that needed attention, such as floods.

       During the recent major floods, three rivers in Johor – Sungai Segamat, Sungai Muar and Sungai Tangkak – exceeded dangerous levels, while more than 1,000 people were evacuated.

       “Many areas in Muar, including Parit Beting, were badly hit by the major floods which hit several states, including Johor, in January.

       “I will help to resolve the problem of floods in this area if I’m elected,” she said when met during her election campaign programme here yesterday.

       The businesswoman will be contesting for the Bentayan seat against two other candidates from Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional.

       Ng Yak Howe of Pakatan won the seat in GE14.

       Gan said she has been visiting houses to meet the constituents and to hear their concerns.

       “I will champion issues affecting women such as domestic violence if I am chosen to represent the voters in Bentayan,” she said, adding that she has been involved in handling domestic violence cases.

       She will also help to improve local tourism activities such as providing a special area for food truck operators.

       This, she said, will help to attract people to Muar.

       “I also have plans to upgrade the parking area at the hospital in my constituency.

       “A multi-storey carpark at the hospital will help to reduce traffic congestion there,” she added.

       Youths in Muar will also be given attention if she wins Bentayan.

       “They are our future and they should be given every opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills for the betterment of our society,” said Gan.
