1646371303 British MP calls on PM to cease ‘£55.3m foreign aid to India'

British MP Johnny Mercer called on Boris Johnson to cease ‘£55.3m foreign aid to India', branding the country as “Putin’s mates” over New Delhi’s silence in condemning its ally for invading Ukraine.

“In 2021/22 we are giving £55.3m to India in Foreign Aid. I am a strong supporter of foreign aid and voted against this Government’s reduction of it,” the Conservative politician said in a tweet.

“However if we sanction Putin’s mates, it’s time to end this donation too. Far worthier causes around,” he said referring to sanctions on Russian oligarchs.

India has urged Russia and Ukraine to end hostilities but stopped short of condemning Russian aggression are it walks a tightrope with an ally and its largest arms supplier on one side and Western partners on the other.

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi has talked to Vladimir Putin twice since the war broke out amid pressure to use its leverage on Russia.

1646370487 Zelensky says ‘do not allow death to Europe’ in calls with UK, US leaders

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said he has informed the leaders of the US, UK and the EU about the fire at the nuclear plant.

Mr Zelensky sounded an ominous warning calling the latest events as potential “end of Europe” if there is an explosion in the reactor.

“If there is an explosion - that’s the end for everyone. The end for Europe. The evacuation of Europe,” he said in an emotional speech in the middle of the night.

“Only urgent action by Europe can stop the Russian troops. Do not allow the death of Europe from a catastrophe at a nuclear power station,” he said

He called on politicians to pressure Russian leadership to stop the onslaught by its forces.

This comes as a fire at Europe’s biggest nuclear plant has caused panic among leaders in Europe due to the potential threat from radiation from the reactor.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said on Twitter that it’s been informed by Ukraine’s nuclear regulator that “there has been no change reported in radiation levels” at a nuclear power station shelled by Russian troops.
