PETALING JAYA: An Indonesian man charged with drug and immigration offences has died in police custody.
Bukit Aman's Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) director Comm Datuk Azri Ahmad confirmed that an investigation is underway.
"The 48-year-old man was arrested under the Dangerous Drugs Act and the Immigration Act for drug use and not having valid documentation. He was charged on March 1 and was placed temporarily at the Bintulu police station lockup in Sarawak," said Comm Azri
"On March 5, the detainee complained of shortness of breath and was sent to the Bintulu hospital for further treatment. The hospital then said that the man had died and the cause of death is still unknown," he said in a statement on Sunday (March 6).
He added that the department's Crime Investigation Unit on Death In Custody is currently investigating the matter.
