JOHOR BARU: Police have been urged to look into the actions of Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching, who allegedly went against police orders when she and a group of politicians gathered at the Johor Baru Tiong-Hua Association building here.
Pasir Gudang MCA member Ang Tun Chek (pic) said DAP had been officially informed of the cancellation of the proposed debate on SJKC Kuek Ho Yao that was supposed to have taken place on Sunday (March 6) but the group and their supporters still showed up at the venue that day.
“Based on live footage of the gathering, Teo and the group, which included several state election candidates, stayed for more than half-an-hour and had a press conference as well as displaying two large banners.
“Their actions clearly challenged the police’s orders and I urge the authorities to look into the matter,” the MCA representative told The Star.
The gathering was broadcast live on several news agencies’ social media platforms, he added.
“I have lodged a police report against Teo, who made several claims about MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong during the gathering,” said Ang.
The much-anticipated debate between Dr Wee and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng was initially slated for March 6 at the association’s hall but stopped short after police did not give the green light for it to go on.
An official letter, signed by Johor MCA secretary Datuk Ng Keng Heng, was sent to inform Lim about the event cancellation on March 6.
Meanwhile, Johor police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said he had seen a live video and photos of the group’s gathering.
“Based on the footage, several people had gathered at the location so we will see if there are any violations of the standard operating procedures.
“We will be calling them up for further investigation if necessary,” he said, adding that no action would be taken if they are cleared of any wrongdoing.
During the gathering, Teo said that although the debate was directed at Lim, he wanted to give her the opportunity to engage in a debate with Dr Wee because of her knowledge of the issue.
“This is because I was former education minister for 22 months and in DAP, there is nobody else as well-versed in Chinese education issues as I am,” she said.
Dr Wee had challenged Lim to the debate over his claims that the former did not contribute as much as him towards the construction of SJKC Kuek Ho Yao in Seri Austin here.
Lim had allegedly made the claim at a ceramah during the second night of the Johor state election campaign.
