A D.C. police officer was caught driving under the influence while off duty in his marked police cruiser early Saturday, according to D.C. police and court filings.

Officer John Bewley, who has worked in the department for 11 years and was assigned to its special operations division, is under investigation by the department’s internal affairs division, his police powers have been revoked, Paris Lewbel, a spokesman for the police department, said in a statement Saturday evening.

Bewley, 37, is facing two charges of driving under the influence and operating a vehicle while impaired, court records show.

The alleged incident occurred at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday on the 1600 block of Connecticut Avenue NW after D.C. police officers stopped a female driver for possibly driving under the influence, according to court filings

The woman, who is not identified in court filings, told the officers that she was on the phone with her boyfriend, whom she identified as a D.C. police officer, according to a police account filed in D.C. Superior Court.

Then Bewley, who was not wearing his uniform, drove up in his marked police car, overhead lights on, according to the court filing. He parked and approached the officers and the woman, ordering her to leave the scene with him while ignoring the officers’ commands to stay away, the court filing alleged.

The court filing said the officers “noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from [Bewley]” and asked if he would be willing to take a sobriety test, to which he replied, “No.”

“Off-duty officer Bewley arrived on scene in his assigned marked take-home vehicle and attempted to interfere with on-duty officers’ actions and displayed signs of impairment himself,” Lewbel said.

The officers arrested Bewley, placing him in handcuffs, the court filing said.

No attorney for Bewley was listed in online court records. Bewley did not respond to attempts to reach him for comment.
