The wife of former Tory MP Andrew Bridgen has made sensational claims that her husband has been captured by an anti-vax “cult”.

Nevena Bridgen, a Serbian opera singer, said that Mr Bridgen, who is now an independent MP after being expelled from the Conservative Party, ignored panicked calls from her as their five-year-old son’s health dramatically worsened.

Nevena, 43, told The Sunday Times that her husband was in Sweden, speaking at an event hosted by Robert F Kennedy Jr’s anti-vax group, whilst she was at home contending with their son’s ailing health.

She told the publication that the MP for North West Leicestershire was “acting as an anti-vax revolutionary and neglecting his son during a health emergency”.

The “cult” or “sect” that has its clutches around her husband, she said, has ripped her marriage apart.

She said: “The first alarming sign of radicalisation was when it was obvious that he was turning on us, when our child got terribly ill … There was no way of pleading with him.

“The human cost of radicalisation and the devastating impact it can have on individuals and their families, and in this case, our family, was spelled out for me for the first time in bold colours.”

Last year, Mr Bridgen was kicked out of the Tories after comparing Covid-19 jabs to the Holocaust in a post on X.

The 59-year-old, his wife claims, “abandoned” her and her son. She says he was told by his group that she was an MI6 agent and therefore should be cut from his life. Nevena has now filed for divorce and blames the Conservative Party for failing to adequately protect him from “radicalisation”.

She told the publication: “The anti-vax conspiracy theorist movement destroyed my life when Andrew became their foot soldier.”

Bridgen regularly appears at anti-vax events and was recently scolded by Leader of the House of Commons, Penny Mordaunt.

Speaking in the chamber on February 29, Mr Bridgen said: “I’ve always opposed capital punishment on the principle that it’s wrong to take a life so it can’t be right for the state to take a life in revenge. Events have caused me to reconsider my position.

“So, Madam Deputy Speaker, can we have a debate on crimes against humanity and the appropriate punishment for those who perpetuate, collude and cover up for these atrocities, atrocities and crimes so severe that the ultimate punishment may be required?”

Giving his conspiratorial question short shrift, Ms Mordaunt said witheringly: “I think the Honourable Gentleman’s incredibly subtle question is not lost on anyone in this House where he might be taking it.

“It is appropriate that the finale of this session, which has featured conspiracy theories, should fall to the honourable gentleman. And I would just caution him also just to reflect with the things that have been said about his own behaviour, what he does on social media, the security measures that have had to be stepped up for honourable members in this place in the wake of some of his social media tweets and questions in this House.”

She continued: “Whatever my disagreements with the honourable gentleman, I will always stand ready to get answers from departments and assist the honourable gentleman in his work.

“But I’m going to call out on every occasion when he is doing things that are, I think, a danger to our democracy and also the safety and security of members of this House.”

Ahead of the next General Election, Mr Bridgen is building “Andrew’s Army” to help him fight his campaign.

Writing on his campaigning website, he said: “We need boots on the ground in North West Leicestershire if we are to overturn the old political order. This is a test case, and our democratic freedoms are on the line.

“If an Independent who actually cares what his constituents think can win here then the model can be followed elsewhere. We can change the world, and bring hope back to these blessed isles of ours.”

Below an image of him pointing à la Lord Kitchener, he called on visitors to the site to become “phone soldiers”.

He said: “The mainstream political parties and their corporate and Union pay masters own the airwaves. The BBC, ITV, Channel Four and the rest will never give me the air time they will grant to my controlled opponents.

“You will be sent group messages that you can forward should you wish. Being a phone soldier in Andrew’s army will require courage. It will not be a job for the faint hearted.”

Nevena has since launched an appeal for financial assistance via a GoFundMe page. On the crowdfunder page she wrote: "I am crowdfunding for lawyers and living expenses, so I can get off emergency benefits, rebuild our lives and my career in order to keep myself and son in Britain."

When asked for comment by the Sunday Times, the Conservative Party refused.

Responding to the story, Mr Bridgen said it "rakes over the embers of a marriage which sadly, like so many during the pandemic, did not work out: a marriage with a small boy at the centre of it who will one day grow up and read [about it]".
