A boy has died after being pulled from a canal in Wolverhampton.

The tragic incident unfolded at around 6pm on Saturday, August 11, when paramedics rushed to the waterway off Hendon Avenue, Ettingshall.

The child was in a critical condition after being rescued from the canal by police officers, the West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) said.

The service sent several crews to the scene of the incident, with the first ambulance arriving three minutes after being called, WMAS added.

Among those in attendance at the scene were a paramedic officer, trauma doctor and critical care paramedic.

Despite the emergency services' best efforts, the boy could not be saved.

A WMAS spokesperson said: "On arrival, crews found a boy who had been pulled from the water by police colleagues in a critical condition.

"He was receiving basic life support by officers and ambulance staff immediately took over to administer advanced life support.

"Sadly, despite everyone’s best efforts, the child could not be saved and he was confirmed dead at the scene."

The circumstances around the incident are currently unclear.
