Nigel Farage accused Labour of a "disgraceful and cowardly act" after it dropped its plans for five local grooming gang inquiries.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper in January said that the Government would provide £5 million to support the local probes. But Home Office minister Jess Phillips yesterday announced that the Government will adopt a "flexible approach" to its plans, prompting accusations that it was watering down its response.

In a video on X, Reform leader Mr Farage said: "Today this government committed a disgraceful and cowardly act. Labour are running scared of the extremist Muslim vote in our inner cities. Perhaps a judicial review is now the way to deal with the mass rape gang scandal."

Yvette Cooper vowed to implement grooming gangs inquiry recommendations
The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) led by Prof Jay found institutional failings and tens of thousands of victims across England and Wales.
In January, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper vowed to set out a timetable for implementing the recommendations of the inquiry.
A series of “victim-centred, locally led inquiries” in five areas would be among the steps carried out, she said at the time.
Conservative frontbencher Katie Lam was among those asking in the Commons about the future of these inquiries.
“Over three months since the Government announced these local inquiries, Tom Crowther KC, a barrister invited by the Home Office to help establish them, knows almost nothing about their progress, and neither do we,” she told the Commons.

Badenoch accuses Labour of 'obfuscation'
Kemi Badenoch hit out at the Government for saying it will adopt a "flexible approach" rather than five local grooming gang inquiries.
The Tory leader said on X: "This move is pure Labour obfuscation. Last week, I met with more rape gang survivors. Brave and determined, they’re deeply sceptical of Labour. One said to me Labour 'lied to the country'.
"So I will force a vote on a full statutory inquiry. Every MP can show whose side they’re on."

Nandy insists Government not watering down grooming gang response
It is not true to suggest Labour is watering down measures to protect against grooming gangs, Lisa Nandy said.
The Government faced a backlash in the Commons on Tuesday for not providing an update on local reviews into grooming it had previously promised.
Asked if it was true to suggest ministers were watering down their plans after the lack of update to MPs, the Culture Secretary told Times Radio: "No, it's not the truth.
"The truth is that we are listening to victims and authorities around the country about the need to give them the right tools to tackle it, this very pernicious problem, in their own areas.
"We believe that decisions are best made by those with skin in the game in their own communities, people who live in those communities, who understand what is happening there."
Ms Nandy said ministers did not want to "impose one system from Whitehall, which might give us a decent press release in the media but doesn't actually tackle the problem".
