A school bus carrying 31 passengers overturned and landed on its side in New Jersey on Monday, sending at least 13 to the hospital.

       The crash occurred on the side of the Garden State Parkway (GSP) in Montvale, according to New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy.

       “Based on a preliminary investigation, a school bus operated by Joseph Itzkowitz, a 44-year-old male from Lakewood, NJ, was traveling north on the GSP,” according to a statement from the New Jersey State Police. “In the area of milepost 170.5, the bus traveled off the right side of the roadway and overturned.”

       As a result of the crash, the driver sustained moderate injuries, a juvenile passenger sustained serious injuries and 13 other juveniles sustained minor injuries.

       Montvale Mayor Mike Ghassali said in a post on Facebook that no one died in the incident.

       The bus was headed from Lakewood, New Jersey to New York State when it overturned just south of Exit 172 around 7:30 p.m., according to the mayor.

       The crash remains under investigation, and no additional information is available.
