On November 16, at 16:00 Moscow time (GMT+3), the Valdai Club will host an online discussion, titled “Regional and International Consequences of the Nagorno-Karabakh Crisis.” The event will take place on the eve of the release of the new Valdai Club report “Breaking the status quo and the international dimension of the crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh”.

       A joint statement by the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia on the night of November 10 stopped the military confrontation in Nagorno-Karabakh, which again showed that ethno-political conflicts in Eurasia are resolved primarily by force. Azerbaijan managed to break the existing status quo and to begin the process of returning the previously lost territories. The success of a military solution creates a temptation for other participants in regional conflicts to follow the same path.

       Russia was able to stop the conflict on its own, without preventing Baku from returning the occupied regions, but also preventing the transformation of Nagorno-Karabakh into the second Serbian Krajina. In terms of its significance, the Armenian-Azerbaijani confrontation went far beyond the Caucasus region. Turkey is committed to strengthening its regional role. And although there will be no Turkish peacekeepers on the new line of contact, Ankara is already turning into an important factor influencing the development of the situation.

       Why did Western countries behave so passively during the crisis? Does this mean the termination of the work of the OSCE Minsk Group? Does the reached agreement pave the way for a final settlement of the conflict or is it just a respite on the road to a new war? How will Turkey’s role change the situation? These and other questions will be answered by the authors of the new Valdai Club report.
