MELAKA: Six siblings who lost their disabled parents in an accident allegedly involving a drunk driver have received benefits from the Social Security Organisation (Socso) to lighten their burden.
They will receive a monthly survivors' pension of RM2,876.14 as well as a one-off funeral benefit of RM4,000.
Melaka unity, community relationship, human resource and consumer affairs committee chairman Ngwe Hee Sem said the benefits were handed over to the couple’s eldest son Sa’eed Ezuddin, 22.
“Socso took prompt action by helping the family after the mishap,” he said after visiting the family at their grandmother's home at Bukit Lintang here on Friday (June 10).
Melaka Socso director Abd Razak Omar was also present.
Ngwe said the State government would also assist four of the siblings who were still schooling.
Ezudddin Mohammad, 50, and his wife Surayah Muhamat, 46, were killed when their motorcycle was hit by a car at Jalan Serkam Pantai in Jasin on Monday (June 6).
The couple, born with disabilities, had been working at the same factory for the past 25 years.
Meanwhile, Jasin OCPD Deputy Supt Mispani Hamdan said the 24-year-old driver had been remanded until June 13.
He said police were awaiting a report from the Chemistry Department on the level of alcohol in the driver’s bloodstream at the time of the accident.
