SOCIAL media users were pleasantly surprised with a video showing a Malay woman having a full conversation in Tamil with a Malaysian Chinese in a foreign country, Harian Metro reported.

Rosni Mohd Yusof, a mother of 13, said that the video was taken in 2018 at Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, Turkey.

Her daughter Aina Afiqah Mat, 25, uploaded the video on TikTok where it went viral.

“At that time, Aina and I wanted to return home after a holiday in Turkey but problems arose when we lost our passports.

“While we were there, my daughter who is fluent in Mandarin, came across a woman from a group of Malaysian Chinese and they chatted.

“Coincidentally, one of the women also knew Tamil so I talked to her, only to find out that she was from Kelantan.

“I did not know that my daughter had uploaded the video of our conversation on TikTok until she told me that it went viral,” the 67-year old said.

Rosni said she had been speaking Tamil since she was seven but had never learnt it in school.

She added that she became fluent because she hung out with her peers, most of whom were Indians.

“In the past, my family and I lived in Kemuning, Sungai Siput Estate in Perak until I was 15, so I had a lot of Indian friends.

“Our daily conversations were in Tamil. I have not practised speaking Tamil for a long time but if I meet Indians, I will speak Tamil,” she said.

Rosni said she enjoyed learning and speaking other languages, and that became the motivation for her to send her children to vernacular school to pick up new languages.

“I like all languages?. When I hear other races talk to each other, I am so happy and more satisfied if I understand and can speak the same.

“Because of that, I sent Aina to a Chinese school so that she could learn Mandarin because in the past, I did not have the opportunity,” she added.

       > Singer Datuk Nora Ariffin, 48, caught the attention of netizens when she took her maid for a holiday in Langkawi recently.

According to Nora, the holiday was a special gift for her maid after 23 years of service, Utusan Malaysia reported.

“We actually consider her to be family. She has been with me for 23 years. I am sharing this story to show that we need to appreciate the kindness people shower on us,” she was quoted as saying on Instagram.

Nora said she really appreciated the efficient work of her maid.

“I could see how happy she was during the holiday. It was her first trip to Langkawi, we even went for a cruise together,” she added.
