TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's Tsukasa Yoshida had her judo gold medal bid thwarted Monday at the Tokyo Olympics, losing to Kosovo's Nora Gjakova in the women's 57-kilogram semifinals.

The 2018 world champion made two unsuccessful attempts to topple Gjakova with an uchi-mata inner thigh throw at Nippon Budokan before the match entered golden score.

Gjakova won the decisive point with a waza-ari throw just after the two-minute mark of extra time.

Reigning Olympic champion Shohei Ono is bidding to win the host nation's fourth judo gold of the games in the men's 73-kg. He is due to face Mongolia's Tsend-Ochir Tsogtbaatar in the semifinals.

The 25-year-old Yoshida took just over a minute to beat China's Lu Tongjuan by ippon in her opening bout, then outpointed Israel's Timna Nelson Levy in the quarterfinals.

Ono overwhelmed Turkey's Bilal Ciloglu in the round of 16, pinning the 2021 world championship bronze medalist for ippon. He dominated Azerbaijan's Rustam Orujov in the quarterfinals, earning ippon with back to back waza-ari throws.
