MEXICAN soap star Carmen Salinas has died aged 82 after suffering a stroke, her family said.

       Her loved ones announced her passing in a statement saying she had died yesterday after being rushed to hospital in Mexico City.

       The actress, who appeared in Mexican films and television for more than six decades, was also hospitalised with a stroke in November.

       On Thursday, her nephew Gustavo Briones said she was being treated in intensive care.

       Later, her daughter, Maria Eugenia Plascencia, told local media outside the hospital that she talked to her mother who had been able to move her feet.

       The 82-year-old actress remained in a medically induced coma before passing away.

       Salinas began her career in comedic soap operas and became known to Mexican viewers for her portrayal of the character La Corcholata in 'Bellas de Noche'.

       Since then she has starred in several films including 'La Pulquería' and 'Las Cari？osas'.

       In 2015 she entered Mexican politics when she was elected to a seat in the the country's Congress representing the Institutional Revolutionary Party.

       The star was born in 1939 in the state of Coahuila which borders the US in northern Mexico.

       Salinas leaves behind her daughter and seven grandchildren.

       Last month, fellow Mexican acting legend Enrique Rocha died at the age of 81.

       The star - best known for playing the villain in soap operas such as The Privilege of Loving and The Ways of Love - was hailed as an "amazing actor" in tributes following his death.
