Met Office new weather warning: More heavy snow & ice as temps feel like -5C in Birmingham

       Icy patches are expected to appear from 3pm this afternoon, continuing through to 10am Monday. It warned the adverse weather would affect "many parts of the UK".

       The Met Office said this morning: "Rain, sleet and snow clearing the south, then ice developing on some surfaces".

       The yellow ice warning covers from Portsmouth up through Birmingham and Newcastle to Edinburgh.

       Hull and Norfolk are also expected to be affected.

       In Birmingham, tonight and tomorrow morning it will feel like -5c. In Edinburgh it will feel like -4c.

       The Met Office noted: "Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, making accidents more likely and journey times longer.

       "Icy surfaces likely, increasing the risk of slips and falls."

       The Met Office explained that longer spells of rain, sleet and snow should clear this evening.

       As the skies open up, a "widespread" frost will develop, it said.

       The weather warning follows a battering from Storm Arwen, which saw violent gusts of nearly 100mph and sudden snowfall across the country.

       David Punton, from the Newcastle Metro network, called it the worst winter storm in the transport system's 41-year history.

       As a result of the storm, three men were killed by falling trees in separate incidents.

       One man died after a tree fell on his car in Antrim, Northern Ireland. Another was crushed by a tree in Ambleside, Cumbria; and a third had his truck hit by a tree in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

       ScotRail has suspended many of its routes until the end of today.

       Network Rail Scotland said it was "one of the most challenging storms in recent memory".

       LNER has told customers not to travel north of York today because they are unable to run trains between Newcastle and Edinburgh.

       More than 100,000 homes were left without power across the UK.

       Scotland saw 75,000 homes without power, while in England 55,000 are cut off.

       In Wales there has been 11,000 homes without power.
