The UK government has highlighted the importance of security at a time of change and global uncertainty. However, existing provisions for those leaving the force are already at breaking point.
Demand for our services grew by 13 per cent last year, with the NHS and social care increasingly stretched. That's why we are clear that the new government has a responsibility to improve support for veterans and end the injustices they face.

The proposed Armed Forces Commissioner Bill, announced in the King’s Speech, is a step in the right direction and a welcome acknowledgement that our service people and their families deserve an independent champion.
However, it must not be forgotten that veterans are also an integral part of our Armed Forces community and our duty to them does not end along with their service. They provide a vital perspective on the challenges service people face, and those we support tell us moving from the military to civilian life is tough if they have a long-term health condition.

It's shocking that 70 per cent of the medically discharged veterans we have supported told us they had a bad experience moving into civilian life.
Four service members leave the military daily due to injury or illness, so this process needs urgent reform. The new Commissioner should ideally have the power to review and fix these issues across all military services.
Furthermore, enhancing the Armed Forces Commissioner's role to include veterans’ affairs will help ensure a brighter future for those who have sacrificed so much. Politicians must tap into those with on-the-ground insights and first-hand expertise.
We understand the King’s Speech is not an exhaustive list of all matters the new government will consider over the next year, but we remain adamant that more needs to be done to ensure our veterans do not fall foul of the system.

This week’s announcement is a step in the right direction, but with the Government acknowledging change is overdue, it must match the commitment of Help for Heroes and other Armed Forces charities and ensure those who served their country get the peace they deserve.
