KOTA KINABALU: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) should consider extending the road tax moratorium beyond Sept 30, says Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin (pic).

       He said that the problems faced by people in Sabah's rural areas are reasons why the JPJ should give more time for road users to renew their road tax.

       "Road users have been told that they can renew their road tax and driving licence online via MySikap or MyEG or even schedule appointments online to do so at the post office or JPJ," the DAP MP said in a statement on Tuesday (Aug 10).

       "All of these require usage of the Internet and computers, smartphones or other devices," he said.

       Chan said he was told that many road users – especially the elderly and those living in the interior – are not Internet-savvy and are unsure how to make and confirm such online bookings.

       Earlier, the JPJ announced that all road users have to renew their driving licence and road tax (LKM) by Sept 30, 2021 as the moratorium would not be extended.

       It had already granted an extension for those with road taxes expiring between June 1 to July 31 this year.

       The JPJ added that checks and roadblocks to ensure compliance and enforcement by police and JPJ would commence on Oct 1.
