KOTA KINABALU: Policemen in Beaufort district were forced to fire two shots at a man suspected of being drunk and high on drugs after he tried to ram them with his car. Beaufort OCPD Deputy Supt Yusoff Zaki Yaacob said that during the incident on Thursday, a team of cops instructed the 57-year-old driver to pull over for an inspection.
“However, he started to reverse his vehicle and tried to ram into the officers as they were talking to him,” he said.
Policemen on the scene had to fire two shots at the tyres of the car in an attempt to stop him.
DSP Yusoff said the man tried to escape on foot. A scuffle broke out before the suspect was restrained.
“Upon questioning, the suspect told the police that he was afraid of getting arrested as he was drunk and had just taken drugs,” he said.
A knife and machete were found after further inspection of the car.
“We also found that the suspect had five previous convictions for various criminal offences,” said DSP Yusoff.
The man has been taken in for further investigation.
