KOTA KINABALU: A nurse lost RM50,000 after being told that an arrest warrant had been issued against her for tax arrears owed by her “company”.
Beaufort district police chief Deputy Supt Yusoff Zaki Mat Yaacob said the 44-year-old nurse, who is attached to a hospital in Beaufort, claimed she received a call from an Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) staff at around 3.30pm on Sunday.
The woman said that the LHDN staff told her there were tax arrears owed by her “company”.
The call was then forwarded to two men claiming to be “police officers” with the Commercial Crimes Investigation Department.
“Both ‘police officers’ told the victim that an arrest warrant had been issued against her.
“She panicked and gave details and passwords of her two bank accounts,” DSP Yusoff Zaki said.
The nurse, he said, lodged a police report at 10.30pm on Sunday after realising that RM50,000 had been transferred out of her accounts via DuitNow to an unknown person.
Police, he said, were investigating the case for cheating and advised the public to be more careful and to not entertain any phone calls from unknown individuals.
