Hastings Labour voter sums up problem with Keir Starmer in one epic sentence

Voters in the key Labour target seat of Hastings on the south coast have been asked to give their opinions of the leader of the opposition. Sir Keir Starmer is currently attempting to stamp his authority on the party at the Labour's annual conference in Brighton. BBC Politics Live sent reporters down to poll potential voters on where they stood on the Labour Party leader with one resident providing a brutally brief summary.

The voter told BBC Politics Live: "Keir, oh bless him!

"He is soo educated and such a clever man.

       "But he is soo unpopular."

"I thought at the beginning he was a great strategist," added another Hastings resident.

"And he had spent all his apparent silence at the beginning...developing some master plan.

"But his master plan seems to be just to attack his colleagues.

"I am not really sure that is the way forwards."

Someone else told Politics Live: "He seems to be very wooly and just sniping from the sidelines."

It comes as the Labour Party Conference entered its third day with Shadow Chancellor Ms Reeves launching plans to abolish business rates and create a new Office for Value for Money.

Addressing Labour Party members Ms Reeves slammed: "The empty shelves in our supermarkets, queues at petrol stations."

She added: "The [Conservative Party] have no idea about the challenges people are facing.

"They have no respect for the people who have kept us going through this pandemic and keep our economy going."

The Shadow Chancellor also took aim at wasteful Government outsourcing during the pandemic.

She continued: "During the pandemic £2billion was spent on government contracts awarded to friends and donors of the Conservative Party. Let's review some of the highlights of the Tories pandemic outsourcing bonanza.

"£90million pounds was given to one firm that had donated £400,000 to the Conservative Party - not a bad return on your investment, is it? £150million pounds to a financial services firm to produce 15 million facemasks which couldn't even be used.

"£350million to a company employing a sitting Conservative MP for test kits that had to be recalled, and £30million to Matt Hancock's pub landlord, and every single one of those cheques signed by Rishi Sunak."
