KOTA KINABALU: A 42-year-old enforcement officer has been detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly receiving a RM5,000 bribe to issue an identity card.

The man was apprehended by Sandakan MACC at the district branch office at 9.30am on Wednesday (June 15) when he was asked to come in to give his statement.

The suspect is believed to have solicited and received RM5,000 gratification from an individual as payment to handle the issuance of a Malaysian identity card.

Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrest and said the man is being held to facilitate investigations under Section 16(a)(B) (for soliciting gratification as an officer for a public body) and Section 17(a) (accepting gratification by an agent) of the MACC Act 2009.

"The suspect has been released under MACC bail and is expected to be charged at the Sandakan special corruption court at the end of this month," he said.
