The Illinois Commerce Commission announced Monday that a new 464 area code will be added to suburban areas south and west of Chicago that use 708.
With a growing number of telecommunication service providers, the new area code will overlay the existing region to help supplement the telephone number supply.
An overlay happens when an area code is assigned to the same geographical location as an existing area code. All customers with the original area code can keep theirs.
In this case, the 464 area code will be assigned to new customers requesting local phone, cellular and paging services as well as alarms. Those who have a 708 prefix will retain their numbers.
The 708 area code serves most of western and southern Cook County and eastern and southern Will County.
This includescommunities such as Alsip, Beecher, Bellwood, Berwyn, Blue Island, Bridgeview, Broadview, Burbank, Calumet City, Chicago Heights, Chicago Ridge, Country Club Hills, Crest Hill, Crete, Dolton, Elmwood Park, Evergreen Park, Flossmoor, Forest Park, Glenwood, Harvey, Harwood Heights, Hazel Crest, Hickory Hills, Homewood, Justice, La Grange, Lansing, Lyons, Markham, Matteson, Maywood, Melrose Park, Midlothian, Mokena, Norridge, Northlake, Oak Forest, Oak Lawn, Oak Park, Orland Park, Palos Hills, Palos Park, Park Forest, Richton Park, River Forest, River Grove, Riverdale, South Holland, Steger, Tinley Park, Westchester, Western Springs and Worth.
The Federal Communications Commission will require that all telephone calls made in the 708 overlay area be completed by dialing 1 followed by the 10-digit number by Jan. 8.
This change was announced earlier this year to make room for 988, the three-digit code ordered by the FCC for the National Suicide Hotline.
