SIBU: A man with RM150,000 worth of firecrackers and fireworks was arrested by the General Operation Force here.
GOF 10th Battalion commanding officer Supt Mohammad Hafiz Kadir said the contraband was planned to be sold for the upcoming Hari Raya and Gawai Dayak celebrations.
He said a police team conducted a raid on April 6 at about 11.45am, at the premises in Jalan Ding Lik Kong where the items were stored.
"The contrabands were sent to this town from Bintulu by land and water transports. The items were stored on the premises for two weeks before the suspect was caught and the items seized,"
he said, during a press conference on Thursday (April 7).
Supt Mohammad Hafiz said the suspect had used Sibu as the transit point for distribution to surrounding areas.
The fireworks were seized under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 and if convicted the suspect faces a maximum of seven years in jail or an RM10,000 fine or both.
Supt Mohammad Hafiz also urged the public to provide them with information on smuggling activity by calling its hotline at 084-211411.
