TOKYO -- Japan's capital reported 4,220 COVID-19 infections on Aug. 24, following 2,447 new infections the day before. Tokyo remains under a fourth state of emergency as it battles a fifth wave of coronavirus cases.
In the first week of August, Tokyo recorded an average of 3,893 new cases per day. The figure rose to 4,231.1 in the second week, and 4,719 in the third, up from the daily average of 1,420.5 for the month of July, when the capital registered a total of 44,034 new infections.
By Aug. 23, a total of 2,384 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.
Tokyo has recorded 318,929 infections to date, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Aug. 23, there were 4,034 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 272 with severe symptoms.
