Octopus Energy is giving customers a free ￡50 discount off their energy bills as part of a rewards offer.

       The UK's largest electricity supplier, which serves 6.8 million customers across the country, says customers will get ￡50 credit added to their account every time they refer a friend.

       Octopus customers simply need to send a unique referral link to their family or friends and if the recipient then signs up directly through the supplier’s website using this link then you will both get the freebie.

       You can find your referral link when you login to your account and it will appear a little way down the home screen of your dashboard.

       Once your friend has fully switched over to Octopus and their first month’s Direct Debit has been paid, the supplier will then automatically add ￡50 credit to both of your accounts.

       You can check whether you’ve received your referral credit when you login to your account and view your account dashboard. There will be an option to check your balance history which will show any credit as +￡50 from Octopus Energy.

       The supplier says it usually takes around four weeks for the money to arrive in your account when your friend joins. If you can’t see the payment then it’s likely your friend is either still waiting to leave their old supplier, or is in the process of setting up their Direct Debit.

       There’s no limit to the amount of people you can refer, so the more people you can get to switch the more money you’ll be rewarded with.

       If you send the link to five friends and they each make the switch then you’ll earn yourself ￡250 worth of energy credit, while getting 10 friends to sign up will earn you a hefty ￡500.

       Octopus says it has one customer who managed to switch over 20 people, giving them ￡1,000 credit to their account. Because it was so much energy, the supplier instead sent the amount via bank transfer so the customer could spend it however they wanted.

       But the supplier adds there are a few restrictions as to how you can share your link, warning that you can’t spam third party sites with it, you can’t use paid ads, or spam Octopus’s X (Twitter) page.

       Octopus said: “If we notice someone consistently doing any of these, some of our friendly octo-people may get in touch with you to remind you of the rules (we also cover them in our formal Terms and Conditions).

       “If someone keeps doing it, we’ve a couple of options, such as charging accounts for any referral credit made through uncool means, or even taking someone’s referral link down. We don’t like to do this, but we do want to keep our online community safe and free from unsolicited spam or rudeness.”
