The news comes as it was reported that a volunteer Greek firefighter has lost his life tackling the blazes consuming the country. It is understood that he was killed when he was hit by a falling utility pole.

       A Home Office source said: "Priti was in Greece last week and saw the devastating effect the fires are having.

       "That's why she is deploying these firefighters to help our international partners in their time of need."
