KOTA KINABALU: Sabah police are investigating several of its officers in connection with the crackdown on illegal gambling by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) recently.
Sabah police commissioner Datuk Hazani Ghazali said no arrests have been made yet.
“Internal action will be taken against policemen found abetting illegal gambling syndicates, or any crime for that matter, ” he told a joint press conference with Sabah MACC director S. Karunanithy here yesterday.
The press conference was to provide updates on the agencies’ joint investigations into the case where four people had been arrested.
In raids on June 21 and June 26, the MACC and police seized RM39, 199 and RM586, 576.71 in four bank accounts suspected to be from illegal gambling.
Policemen were also being investigated for allegedly receiving bribes to cover up the activity, it was reported then.
Karunanithy said the four arrested comprised two men and two women, aged between 20 and 50.
He added that the bribes offered were believed to have totalled about RM10, 000.
“Our investigations are ongoing, and for now, our focus is on the syndicate members, ” he said.
