Mayor welcomes external review of arrest involving RCMP officer caught on video in New Brunswick

The Mayor of Campbellton, N.B., says he welcomes the external review of an altercation between an RCMP officer and a man during an arrest last Friday.

Video of the arrest circulated widely on social media, and it appears to show an officer repeatedly striking the male suspect.

The 30-year-old suspect refused medical treatment and was arrested.

Mayor Ian Comeau says in a video posted to the city’s Facebook page that many in the community have questions, and an independent probe will help provide answers.

New Brunswick does not have its own police review agency, and on Saturday, Quebec’s police watchdog said it has been asked to investigate the incident in the northern New Brunswick city.

The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes says the RCMP received a call for a man allegedly wielding a stick who had entered a local business.

The bureau will report its findings to the New Brunswick Public Prosecution Service, which will determine whether charges are warranted against the officer, who has been placed on administrative leave.

Mr. Comeau says he’s confident the review will establish the circumstances of the event, including what transpired before the video was shot.

The Mayor says the RCMP has assured him the circumstances of the arrest are the subject of an internal probe, and he says intervention techniques must be improved to respect health and safety of all individuals, particularly those most vulnerable.
