GEORGE TOWN: Reaching out to help those in need, Penang MCA has donated 20 oxygen concentrators to the Bukit Mertajam Hospital.
Penang MCA Chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng said they managed to raise funds to purchase the 20 oxygen concentrators for the Bukit Mertajam Hospital upon hearing about their dire need for the medical devices.
"The chairman of the hospital's Board of Visitors, Datuk Kang Chun Keong reached out to us. We took immediate steps to help the patients at the hospital," he said.
Tan said that the hospital is treating more than 100 Covid-19 patients and added that he believes the oxygen concentrators will be of use and benefit the patients with respiratory issues.
Tan said in a statement on Saturday (Aug 21) that he managed to secure the oxygen concentrators in a short time with the help of the public.
"Of the 20, the Yong Heng Bakti Fund Organisation donated nine and I personally donated one," said Tan
"In addition to the above, the Penang Port Commission and Penang Port Sdn Bhd each donated two oxygen concentrators to the Kepala Batas Hospital," he added.
An oxygen concentrator is an essential medical device used to improve symptoms of shortness of oxygen levels for Covid-19 or any other respiratory diseases such as asthma, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and flu that causes oxygen levels in our body to decrease drastically.
