GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan government on Wednesday decided to enhance security for Chinese nationals in the region, reviewing current arrangements and discussing new standard operating procedures issued by the National Counter-Terrorism Autho-rity (Nacta).

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting held in Gilgit and chaired by Chief Secretary Abrar Ahmad Mirza.

During the meeting, Chief Secretary Mirza said the GB government had begun taking practical steps to review and improve the security of Chinese citizens residing in camps and hotels across various districts. He emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals working on projects in the region.

He directed law enforcement agencies and relevant officials to ensure foolproof security for Chinese nationals, particularly those involved in developmental projects.

An official source said the meeting was convened to assess current security arrangements and to implement the newly issued SOPs by Nacta. These SOPs provide guidelines on categorising, coordinating and enhancing the security measures for Chinese nationals.

The meeting was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Home Secretary Syed Ali Asghar, Information Secretary Mir Waqar Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner Gilgit Amir Azam Hamza, Deputy Commissioner Skardu Arif Ahmed, DIG Police Gilgit Range Raja Mirza Hassan, and the DIG headquarters.

Commissioner Baltistan Najeeb Alam, DIG Astore-Diamer Division, SSP Shigar, SSP Ghanche and other officials also participated.
