Why is there no local news on BBC Breakfast?

BBC Breakfast viewers have been left puzzled by the programme's decision to not include the regional bulletins.

The daily news programme, fronted by Dan Walker and Louise Minchin, usually cuts away at just before 6.30am to different studios to deliver local news depending on viewers' locations.

But when BBC Breakfast returned to televisions screens after going off air for two weeks as the channel covered the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the segment was not brought back in.

Viewers took to social media to complain about not being able to catch up with the latest news in their area, contacting BBC Breakfast on Twitter for answers.

The BBC has shared an explanation as to why the regular segment is missing, saying the Covid-19 pandemic is causing problems for regional news teams.

Why is there no local news on BBC Breakfast?

Like many companies, the BBC is experiencing a staff shortage due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite the rules around the 'pingdemic' being eased on August 16 to allow double vaccinated brits to escape isolation, the broadcaster says they're still struggling.

On their website, the BBC explain: “As in many workplaces, we’re experiencing staffing issues caused by Covid.

The 6:30pm regional news programmes are by far our most watched bulletins so maintaining them is our key priority. We’ll return to normal as soon as possible..”

What do changes mean for viewers?

For the time being, viewers in England won't be able to catch up on their local news through BBC Breakfast.

Instead, regional newsrooms will focus on making sure their 6.30pm programmes are able to continue as normal, despite the ongoing staffing issues.

       Which areas are impacted?

While English viewers are still no longer receiving local news updates on BBC Breakfast, Scottish, Irish and Welsh viewers will still have access to regional coverage.

All regions will be able to catch up on the local news on the 6.30pm regional news programmes, through local radio, and on the BBC News website.

       When will local bulletins return?

The BBC have told viewers they're hoping the bulletins can return as soon as possible, but haven't given a specific date yet.
