A gathering of around 30 have stormed the Scottish landmark, Edinburgh Live reported. Reports of an incident emerged around 5.45pm, with emergency services currently in the area, close to the entrance to the Museum of The Royal Regiment for Scotland.

One eyewitness claimed that members of the public were swiftly evacuated after the group arrived.

In a video shared on social media, one woman can be heard saying "we have seized Edinburgh Castle".

She continues: "We're waiting to restore the rule of law. We're doing this peacefully and we're doing this lawfully.

"We are using article 61 of the Magna Carta. We have had enough.

"The people of Scotland have had enough and today we claim our power back.

"The government has been acting treasonous against we the people."

News of the storming of the storming of the Scottish landmark - where James Stuart, the first King of both Scotland and England was born in 1566 - spread like wildfire.

Many social media users also pointed out the irony of quoting the Magna Carta - often heralded as the first piece of democratic legalisation - to stage a coup.

One user posted: "Protesters have seized Edinburgh Castle allegedly invoking the right of Magna Carta apparently.

Others pointed out that the Magna Carta - signed by King John in 1215 doesn't apply to Scotland.

One wrote: "Fantastic. Edinburgh Castle has been seized by protesters under the rights of Magna Carta.

"Apart from Magna Carta is not law in Scotland."

In another video of the "storming" of the castle, one female protestor says: "This building belongs to us. This is a public building."

She added: "We have taken the castle back which belongs to the people.

"We're going to restore the rule of law."

Filming herself the woman then brings in another protestor who says that "treason" by the Government has been going on too long and they "had" to act.

The unnamed protestor then says: "We're taking everybody down."

Mustering her inner braveheart, she continues: "No more enslavement. From this day the people of the Commonwealth are going to be free."

Police officers later arrive at the castle and the woman films herself confronting them.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Officers are currently in attendance at Edinburgh Castle and are engaging with a group of people who have gathered within the Castle grounds.”
