The closure applied to southbound traffic approaching Bristol City Centre, between Junction 1 A4174 (Hambrook) to Junction 2 B4058 Stapleton Road (Eastville) and came into force since 2.30am - although the road has now reopened. Avon and Somerset Police tweeted: "Officers are at the scene of a serious single-vehicle collision on the #M32 southbound between J1-2. An investigation is underway."
National Highways: South West tweeted: "#M32 Southbound J1 #Hambrook towards J2 #Eastville is currently closed due to an ongoing incident.
"We are on scene and working with police to reopen this road as soon as possible.
"Further updates will follow when the road reopens."
Just after midday, it tweeted: "We have reopened the carriageway now with a lane 1 closure past scene.
"Please approach the scene with caution. Thank you for your patience."
Emergency services were called after the vehicle left the highway and plunged into the undergrowth.
There are no reports of any injuries so far, but Express.co.uk has asked South West Ambulance Service whether they are in attendance.
The disruption has also resulted in delays on the M4.
Traffic Wales South tweeted: "#M4 Eastbound J30 Cardiff Gate to J26 Malpas.
"Congestion in the area delays possible."
