KUALA PILAH: Three friends have been ordered to serve 29 months in jail after they pleaded guilty to trying to steal an automated teller machine (ATM).

       Mohd Ridzuwan Md Daud 36, Mohamad Faris Zaki, 29, and Mohd Najib Husain, 26, did not contest the charge after it was read out to them before magistrate Saiful Sayoti yesterday.

       The three were said to have committed the offence at an ATM kiosk in Johol at around 4am on Dec 13 last year. They were charged under Sections 379 and 511 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same Act. Offenders can be jailed up to seven years or fined or both, upon conviction.

       The three also pleaded guilty to a charge of breaking a glass enclosure at the ATM kiosk, causing RM1,500 in losses. For this, they were each sentenced to one year in jail. They were charged under Section 427 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between one and five years or a fine or both.

       The court also ordered Mohd Ridzuwan to serve three years in jail after he pleaded guilty to a third charge of stealing a car. He committed the offence at around 3am on Nov 16 last year at Dangi.

       All three accused, who were unrepresented, will serve their sentences concurrently.
