Douglas Lim, 43, actor and comedian

The fact that our country achieved independence without any bloodshed is a huge achievement. I don’t think this takes away anything from our victory or makes it hollow.

Our fight for independence was done in a very strategic way. The timing may have favoured us as well, as the British empire was gradually trying to let go of its colonies.

We still needed to have a functioning government and country though, and not end up in complete anarchy and chaos. I do believe it was done very well.

The leaders and the rakyat of that time shared the same objective of growing as a nation, which enabled them to do really well in those early years.

I am very proud of and grateful to everyone who fought for our independence and then guided the country through its formative years.

Nowadays, Malaysians are getting more vocal about their hopes and dreams for their country.

Having such a strong and passionate voice is vital for the progression of any country.

Malaysians are hungry for success. We can be a bit too proud and defensive at times, but that just reflects our passionate nature.

Just take a look at social media, where some of our strongest voices have spoken up.

Some may call them keyboard warriors, but they may end up effecting positive change in the real world one day.

I want Malaysia to be a country that allows for freedom of expression. I want it to be a country that welcomes the exchange of ideas but also has a strong moral compass.

Malaysians must also understand that they need to be as ethical as possible.

I am not talking about legalities because there will always be ways to circumvent the law. Can we all just try our best to be ethical and play by that rule?

I would also like to tell my fellow Malaysians that we can succeed by being nice. We don’t have to be cutthroat.

Many of us should be thankful that we did not have to live through a war or make sacrifices to achieve independence.

We haven’t had to fight against another country or enemy since achieving independence, but I think we need to have the mentality that we are at war now – against the Covid-19 pandemic.

This unseen virus has affected so many lives and overwhelmed our healthcare system.

We need to recognise that the pandemic is the real enemy and nothing else.

To all Malaysians, I wish you Selamat Hari Merdeka!
