PETALING JAYA: The downward trend of new daily Covid-19 cases - which has been between 6,000 and 7,000 over the past week - is expected to increase soon, in part due to interstate travel.

The Health Ministry projected an average of 7,576 cases over the next five days, said Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin (pic) in a press conference on Thursday (Oct 21).

Khairy had also said that three states, namely Kuala Lumpur, the Federal Territory of Putrajaya and Negri Sembilan, had recorded an increase in infections since the government lifted the cross-state restrictions on Oct 11.

On Thursday (Oct 21), the Health Ministry reported 6,210 new daily cases, including 42 imported cases.

The lowest daily cases for the period between Oct 16 and Oct 21 were reported on Oct 18 with 5,434 cases.

The last time the new daily case figure was around the 5,000 mark was on June 28 at 5,218 cases.

Additionally, the number of recoveries has continued to surpass the number of new cases for almost a month, and this has reduced the number of active Covid-19 cases.

On Thursday (Oct 21), the Health Ministry reported 7,562 recoveries, bringing the recoveries to 2,303,583 cases (95.4%) while cumulative Covid-19 cases stood at 2,413,592.
