KUALA LUMPUR: All eyes will be on the Malaysia Tourism Centre (Matic) tonight for the much-anticipated public debate between former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The event is scheduled to start at 9pm Thursday (May 12) and the two personalities are expected to debate two topics - whether the government should assist ailing oil-and-gas company Sapura Energy Bhd and the issue of Malaysia's future in terms of its economy, politics and direction.

Supporters from both sides could be seen gathering at Matic from as early as 6pm Thursday.
Tonight's debate was initially planned to have been held at Universiti Malaya with the Universiti Malaya Students’ Union offering to host the debate on campus.
However, university authorities rejected the plan.

The argument over saving the company started as a social media spat between Najib and PKR’s Rafizi Ramli, with the former premier calling for the bailout and the former Pandan MP being against it.
The debate will feature three segments, starting with whether Sapura would need a bailout, followed by a debate on the future and direction of Malaysia’s economy, politics and governance.
The final session will be a question-and-answer session from those at Matic.

The debate will also be aired live on The Star's Facebook page as well as on several media outlets as well as at the Dewan Tun Hussein Onn, PTWC.
