       A rare and spectacular Blue Moon has been lighting up the skies since Friday and will be visible until Monday morning. Passionate stargazers have been sharing images of the impressive night wonder over the weekend - but there is no need to worry if you have not caught a glimpse yet. Express.co.uk has compiled a guide to help you see this magnificent sight.

       A Blue Moon is scheduled to glitter in the night skies on August 21, 22 and 23.

       The stunning phenomenon only happens around once every three years meaning this spectacle should not be missed.

       The last Blue Moon was seen on Halloween in 2020 when the Blue Moon was near red Mars.

       These nightly wonders are given their name because they are the second of two full moons in a calendar month.

       The upcoming Blue Moon will crest on August 21 to 22 and the moon will be near planets again.

       The moon is due to be beside Jupiter and Saturn.

       Generally, blue moons come around once every two or three years and the next official Blue Moon will occur in August 2023.

       In 2018, unusually, there were two Blue Moons in one year and only two months apart, one of which was a lunar eclipse.

       The next time there will be two Blue Moons in a year will be 2037.

       For US citizens, the best time to see the Blue Moon will be around 1.04am ET, according to NASA.

       But it is due to reach its peak illumination at around 8.02am EDT (1.02pm BST) on Sunday.

       The moon will be visible at night, but reaches its peak at 12.01am on the morning of August 22.

       The best time to see the moon was on August 21 at around 8.10pm, but from around 10pm to midnight gave you your best viewing opportunity.

       BBC Weather said that Sunday is the best time to see August’s full moon,

       Native Americans have referred to this Blue Moon as the Sturgeon Moon because of the fish that were plentiful in the North American lakes at this time of year.

       Skygazers already spotted the stunning full moon on Saturday night and were quick to share images of the fascinating spectacle on social media.

       NASA said that this weekend’s Blue Moon will be seen mainly on Sunday night.

       The Moon will appear full for about 3 days around this time, from Friday night through Monday morning, making this a full Moon weekend.

       The full Moon will be on Sunday for most of the Earth, from the Kamchatka, Fiji, and New Zealand time zones eastward to the international date line - the full Moon will be on Monday morning.

       According to NASA: “As summer continues, the daily periods of sunlight continue to shorten. On Sunday, August 22, 2021, (the day of the full Moon), morning twilight will begin at 5.27am EDT, sunrise will be at 6.28am, solar noon will be at 1.10.51pm when the Sun will reach its maximum altitude of 62.66 degrees, sunset will be at 7.53pm and evening twilight will end at 8.54pm.”
