THE sister of Sabina Nessa, who was killed as she walked to meet a pal, has urged Boris Johnson to "step up" efforts to keep women safe.

       Jebina Yasmin Islam called on the PM and London Mayor Sadiq Khan to act as women "don't feel safe" on the streets.

       Primary school teacher Sabina, 28, was attacked as she walked to a pub near her home in Kidbrooke, South East London, to meet an old friend.

       Her body was found by a dog walker covered in leaves near the OpenSpace community centre the following day just 200 yards from home

       Koci Selamaj, 36, was charged with murder and appeared at The Old Bailey last month.

       The court heard Sabina was allegedly killed with a 2ft long weapon in a "premeditated" attack.

       SISTER'S PLEA

       Jebina told ITV News London: "Boris [Johnson] needs to do something.

       "Sadiq Khan needs to implement something for us to feel safe to walk the streets alone.

       "We should not be going home extra early just because we don't feel safe - we shouldn't.

       "We are independent, we live in a country where we can walk alone - but we can't because of what's happening and what's happened to my sister.

       "We need to make sure this does not happen again. Boris, Sadiq Khan - they need to step up."

       Statistics from Femicide Census show a woman is killed by a man every three days in the UK.

       'HURTING INSIDE'

       Sabina was struck with a two-ft-long weapon before being carried away unconscious to the park, the Old Bailey was told last month.

       Sabina, who taught a year one class at Rushey Green Primary School in Catford, was found covered in leaves near a community centre five minutes from her home on September 18, almost 24 hours after she was attacked.

       A post-mortem examination has yet to confirm the exact cause of her death but the attack was said to have involved "extreme violence".

       Garage worker Selamaj, from Eastbourne, East Sussex, was arrested in the seaside town and charged with her murder.

       During the hearing, Selamaj who has already indicated he will deny murder, spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth before a timetable for the case was set.

       Jebina said her sister's death had shocked her family and the whole community.

       She said: "You just don't feel like this would happen to you. Not enough words to explain how much it's hurting inside.

       "Who would have thought it's five weeks on since she passed away, but feels like we just got the news yesterday."

       Jebina added: "We are four sisters not three - we will always be four sisters even though she's not here."

       A Home Office spokesman said: "Our priority is tackling violence against women and girls, which is why we are funding a new national policing lead for VAWG in recognition of the seriousness of these crimes, and why the Home Secretary will also chair a cross-government taskforce to drive action and improvements in this area.

       "We are also investing a further ￡25 million in the Safer Streets Fund for measures to ensure women and girls feel safe in public spaces, and have also introduced on online tool, StreetSafe, which will enable the public to anonymously report areas where they feel unsafe."
