Braverman says Labour should be 'honest' with the British people

The Conservatives comfortably won a by-election in Dinnington, Rotherham yesterday and even increased the party's vote share. This prompted Tory MP Brendan Clarke-Smith to ridicule Labour's deputy leader Angela Rayner after Ms Rayner visited Dinnington during the election campaign. Mr Clarke-Smith shared photographs of Ms Rayner's visit to Dinnington, where she joined Labour officials on a door-knocking campaign.

The Tory MP joked: "I think Angela Rayner made all the difference."

In the council by-election, the Conservatives won 42.7 percent of the vote, compared to Labour's 32.9 percent.

Both of the parties increased their vote share compared to 2021.

However, the turnout was only 27.38 percent.

Reacting to the loss, senior figures in Labour told The Star that they were “disappointed” by the result but insisted people want change.

Jake Richards, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Rother Valley, who campaigned in the election, said the result would have been different in a general election setting.

Mr Richards said: “A general election is very different to a local ward by-election.

"I am confident that people here want a change in government after 13 years of Conservative rule.”

This comes as a new Ipsos Mori poll reveals that Rishi Sunak still lags behind Keir Starmer.

Lord Frost - 'I was involved in the Labour Party at university and for a little bit afterwards'

The latest Ipsos Political Pulse, carried out online between 30th June and 3rd July, found that 51 percent have a negative impression of Prime Minister Sunak on his policies for the cost of living.

The same polling found that only 23 percent of people think the Tories can run the country competently, while 57 percent said they cannot.

54 percent of respondents said they have an unfavourable view of the Conservatives and just 22 percent said they have a favourable opinion.

The figures will make grim reading for the Conservatives ahead of three by-elections on July 20.

The three by-elections will provide a major test of Rishi Sunak's authority.

They are taking place in the west London constituency of Uxbridge and South Ruislip, Selby and Ainsty in North Yorkshire, and the Somerset seat of Somerton and Frome.

Labour has particularly targeted Uxbridge and South Ruislip, and Selby and Ainsty.

The Liberal Democrats are expected to be the main challengers in Somerton and Frome.
