Vaughan Gething’s implosion was a long time coming, largely inevitable, and terrible for the reputation of Labour in Wales.
While Labour won big in Wales at the General Election, gaining nine seats and helping to wipe the Tories out entirely, looking under the hood there were some worrying signs about the party’s performance.

While nationally Labour increased its vote share, in Wales the party’s support actually fell by 3.9%.
This coincided with a number of huge errors from the governing Labour Party in Cardiff, who after total political dominance since devolution 25 years ago, appear to have run out of steam and energy.
But unfortunately for the Tories, and even Plaid Cymru, it won’t be them who are ready to pick up the ball from the back of the Labour scrum.

Instead, Reform stands poised to deal a huge blow to Labour come the next Senedd election in 2026.
Unlike Westminster or local councils, Wales uses a proportional representation system to elect assembly members.
Reform UK came third in Wales a fortnight ago, and were just 1.3% of the vote from overtaking the Tories - a performance much stronger than in England and even than the party’s performance in East Anglia where they picked up two of their five MPs.
Were Reform UK to get this result with Wales’s PR electoral system, they could win double-digit seats and even become the official opposition in the Welsh Parliament.
Speaking this afternoon following the resignation of Vaughan Gething, Nigel Farage issued this damning warning to the Labour Party: “In the general election, Reform launched its contract with the people on the Gurnos Estate in Merthyr to demonstrate the reality of a Labour government.

“Even Keir Starmer has described the Labour administration in Wales as a “blueprint” and “living proof of what Labour looks like in power.
“If 20mph speed limits, a failing NHS and falling education standards weren’t bad enough, we can now add political chaos and habitual mismanagement to that list.
“Reform UK stands ready to give the people of Wales a new voice.”
Counter to the narrative of loudmouth left-wing pro-independence activists on social media, Nigel Farage has always enjoyed significant popularity in Wales.
In the 2016 Welsh Assembly elections, Ukip won 12.5% of the popular vote and won seven seats, promoting big names like Tory MP defector Mark Reckless, and Neil Hamilton.

In the 2019 European Parliament elections, Mr Farage’s next outfit, The Brexit Party, topped the poll with 32.5% - 12.9% ahead of the second place pick - and won in 19 out of the 22 council areas.

While Reform UK won a surprisingly impressive five MPs at the election, Mr Farage and others in the party have been keen to stress it was only the beginning, and that they hope to supplant the Tories as the main right-wing opposition ahead of 2029.
Becoming the official opposition in Wales in two year’s time should be a solid goal for the party - and evidence from the last decade in British politics suggests it is more than achievable.
Labour should be very worried.
