Hospitals will carry out operations in the evening and over weekends to get waiting lists down under a Labour government, according to Shadow Health Secretary Wes Streeting. The intensive work will allow a week’s worth of operations to take place in one day, Labour claims.
Mr Streeting said: “Labour will cut NHS waiting times with 40,000 more evening and weekend appointments each week, paid for by clamping down on tax dodgers and non-dom loopholes.”

At the same time, neighbouring hospitals will share staff and waiting lists, which Labour says will help the NHS provide an extra 40,000 appointments a week and get patients seen faster. Staff and resources will be pooled across a region made up of around five hospitals.

Labour plans to pay for the policy by “clamping down on tax dodgers” and closing remaining non-dom tax loopholes. The Government has already announced that non-dom tax status is to be abolished from April 2025, raising ￡2.7 billion.

It says the plans build on a system already in place in Guys and St Thomas’s hospital in London, which has introduced “high intensity theatre lists” in which two theatres run side by side on an eight-hour shift, allowing quick turnover of patients.
Mr Streeting said: “14 years of Conservative neglect has seen waiting lists treble and, despite Rishi Sunak’s promise, they are still rising.
“Only Labour has a plan to reform our NHS, get hospitals working together with shared waiting lists and staff, to get patients treated on time again. We will learn from the great innovations already happening in the health service, and take the best of the NHS to the rest of the NHS.”

“While Labour would increase your taxes, the Conservatives are making progress on cutting the NHS waiting lists which have fallen by around 200,000 since September 2023, the biggest six-month fall in over ten years outside the pandemic.
