Long waits for appointments are a key challenge for the NHS (Image: Shared Content Unit)
Teams of doctors sent to parts of England with high joblessness have succeeded in slashing waiting lists at more than twice the speed of the rest of the nation. The doctors were deployed in September with the goal of “busting through the backlog” so people could get off waiting lists and into work.
Waiting lists in these areas have fallen at “more than double the rate of the rest of the country”, according to the Department of Health and Social Care. In the 20 areas where the scheme is in action, 37,000 cases have been removed.

The teams are charged with introducing better ways of working, taking inspiration from Formula One pit stops to reduce “wasted time” before operations.
Up to 100 patients have been seen in a day in “super-clinics” for the Northern Care Alliance and Manchester Foundation Trust. In these “one-stop appointments”, patients are assessed, diagnosed and put on a treatment pathway in one go.
Employment advisers are also on-site to help patients get over barriers to returning to work. Those who need surgery are booked onto “high-flow theatre” lists.

Super-clinics for gynaecology have been delivered at the weekends in Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Trust. And waiting lists for heart scans at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust have fallen from around 2,700 patients to approximately 700 – with everyone having their scan within six weeks.
There is huge concern about the number of people out of work because of long-term sickness. There were 2.1million adults “economically inactive” because of ill-health in July 2019, but this hit 2.9million in October 2023.
More “crack teams” of doctors will be sent out around the country this year.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting said: “By sending top doctors to provide targeted support to hospitals in the areas of highest economic inactivity, we are getting sick Brits back to health and back to work. I am determined to transform health and social care so it works better for patients – but also because I know that transformation can help drag our economy out of the sluggish productivity and poor growth of recent years.”
Mr Streeting said this was a case of “taking the best of the NHS to the rest of the NHS”.

Ed Argar, Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, said: “The amazing work of NHS and social care frontline staff has made a real difference for patients, alongside the Conservatives’ innovations to cut waiting lists that are now delivering results, so it is positive news the Government are building on those foundations.
“But thanks to Rachel Reeves’s Budget, unemployment continues to rise, working people won’t get the opportunities they deserve, and Labour’s jobs tax will divert money away from frontline public services as pharmacies, hospices, dentists and GPs struggle to absorb the costs.
“With the NHS now coming under direct ministerial control, Labour will have nowhere to hide from patients’ anger at the consequences of their choices.”
