Where is Keir Starmer? Why is Ed Miliband standing in for Labour leader?

Sir Keir Starmer was unable to attend the House of Commons today (Wednesday, October 27) despite it being the day of the Autumn Budget 2021. The Labour leader was unable to challenge Prime Minister Boris Johnson during PMQ's or Chancellor Rishi Sunak after the Budget 2021 was revealed. But where is he?

Sir Keir Starmer was absent from the House of Commons today for PMQs and the Autumn Budget 2021.

The Speaker of the House revealed the Labour leader had tested positive for COVID-19 and would not be attending.

In his stead, former Labour leader Ed Miliband would be stepping into the breach.

Sir Keir tested positive for the virus - forcing him into his fifth bout of self-isolation as Budget 2021 day arrived.

The Labour leader is reportedly feeling fine and is taking daily lateral flow tests.

Today his rapid test came back with a positive Covid result the Labour camp reports.

The Shadow Business Secretary Ed Miliband replaced Sir Keir during his absence on October 27.

Mr Miliband kicked off proceedings joking "just like old days".

He added: "I can reassure the House - it’s for one time only”.

Mr Miliband faced Prime Minister Boris Johnson for PMQ's - but he will not take up the mantle for the Budget 2021.

Instead, the Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves will respond to the Budget on behalf of the Opposition as the Labour Deputy Leader Angela Rayner is currently on bereavement leave.

Despite self-isolating, Sir Keir tweeted about the Government's Budget earlier today.

He said the plan "must take pressure off working people".

The Labour leader added: "With costs growing and inflation rising, Labour would cut VAT on domestic energy bills immediately for six months.

Speaking during PMQ's on Wednesday, Mr Miliband used the session to criticise the Government for cutting overseas aid while lobbing nations for $100bn for climate projects in poorer countries ahead of COP26.

Mr Miliband told MPs: "We all need the vital Cop26 summit in Glasgow to deliver next week because failing to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees will have devastating consequences for our planet and that is shared across this House.

“Does the prime minister agree that to keep that goal of 1.5 degrees alive we need to roughly halve global emissions in this decisive decade?"

The PM was admitted into intensive care last year when he had Covid.

He sent his best wishes for Sir Keir's recovery.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Johnson said: ""I think the whole house will extend their sympathies to the leader of the opposition. I hope he returns soon."
