PETALING JAYA: Labuan's Dermaga Merdeka port currently can only accommodate 900 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) as it has reached 75% capacity, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

In a Facebook post, the Transport Minister said that any containers in excess of this have to be stored 10km away from the port.

"Dermaga Merdeka has a maximum container handling capacity of 4,000 TEU and has now reached 75% capacity.

"However, only 900 TEU can be stored in the Dermaga Merdeka while the remaining containers need to be stored in an area located 10km from the port," he said during his visit on Thursday (May 19).

Dermaga Merdeka, also known as Labuan Liberty Port, is managed by Megah Port Management (MPM) Sdn Bhd.

Dr Wee added that the visit was also to survey port infrastructure that need to be upgraded.

"I have reviewed the infrastructure at Dermaga Merdeka that needs to be upgraded to ensure that container handling, including the entire operation here, can run better and smoother," he said.

Dr Wee was accompanied by Labuan Ports Authority (LPA) chairman Datuk P. Kamalanathan, general manager Mizool Amir Mat Derus and other top management personnel during his visit.
